FAMILY SUPPORT FOR ADDICTION

Why Family Support During Recovery Matters

Recovering from addiction is a challenging process, and family and community support can be crucial to the recovery process. Addiction is a disease that impacts not only the person struggling with it, but also their loved ones.

Families and friends may feel helpless, frustrated, and overwhelmed watching someone they love being affected by addiction, and may not know where to start.

At Insight Northwest Recovery, we incorporate family therapy and family support groups into our treatment programs for young adults and college students.

When treating adolescents, it is important to consider how the people in their home could be exacerbating their substance abuse or mental illness, and identifying changes that the family can work on together to keep recovery at the forefront of their home.

Therapy sessions focus on incorporating a non-blaming, collaborative approach on improving relationships and setting benchmarks for success for your whole family unit. These sessions can be done in-person, or we offer virtual family therapy sessions for convenience.

Types of Treatment We Offer

Insight Northwest Recovery has four levels of outpatient treatment options. Outpatient care is optimal for clients who are transitioning from residential treatment programs, have completed a medical detox, or have a less severe or “mild” addiction. All of our programs emphasize individual behavioral health therapy and group counseling, as well as education-based activity modules, peer support, and case management. Often, stepping away from your daily life for three months is not possible, and our programs are designed to offer the same benefits as inpatient treatment, while giving you the coping skills to allow you to attend daily commitments such as school or work.

The levels of outpatient treatment that we provide at Insight Northwest Recovery are:

1 - Intensive Day Treatment (PHP)

The outpatient treatment process begins with Intensive Day Treatment, also known as PHP or Partial Hospitalization. This step provides our clients the opportunity to participate in a daily structured treatment program that combines individual therapy, group therapy and education, and activity-based therapies. In this program, you would attend 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks.

2 - Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

Following PHP, clients will often move to the next step of our program, Intensive Outpatient Programs, or IOP. This step is slightly less intensive than PHP but offers many of the same benefits. Like PHP, you would meet for group education and counseling sessions and utilize activity-based therapies as part of your treatment plans. The IOP program runs in 3 hour group counseling sessions, 3 times per week, for 3 months.

3 - Outpatient Treatment

Once a client has completed one or more of the intensive outpatient programs, the next step is Standard Outpatient Treatment. Our standard program also utilizes group education and counseling sessions. However, unlike PHP or IOP the sessions are shorter and meet less frequently. For this step of the program, you would meet 3-hours a week for group counseling sessions for 3 months.

4 - After Care

The main goal of our After Care Program is to set you up for long-term recovery. Following steps 1–3 of our treatment program, you would transition into our after care program to help you manage your addiction and recovery long-term. This program schedule runs in 1 hour group counseling sessions, 1 time per week, for 1 year.

As you complete our programs, our goal is to ease you back into daily life without the burden of substance use disorder. Community reinforcement is a large part of our program, and we seek to empower families and loved ones to take an active part in the recovery process.

Community in Addiction Treatment

Families affected by addiction often don’t know where to start. The emphasis in the road to sober living is often on the individual who is struggling with addiction. While of course, no one is as impacted directly by substance use as the person who is dealing with the addiction, family members and loved ones are often affected by the fallout of this disease.

Family therapy can be a great way to incorporate families of addicts into the recovery process, and help them to feel empowered to help the person they love and set appropriate boundaries for themselves and the family unit.

Insight Northwest Recovery offers tools and support for the wellbeing of friends and family impacted by addiction. We focus on developing tools for positive communication, and methods of shifting the way you interact with your family members struggling with addiction. By not only giving support, but being willing to make changes to your family dynamic to aid in recovery, you can be a vital part of helping your loved one overcome their addiction.

Signs of Addiction

Education is a powerful tool when it comes to helping someone struggling with addiction, and knowing the signs and symptoms of addiction can help you identify if your loved one needs help. Folks who are affected by addiction will continue to use drugs or alcohol, even if it is negatively impacting their health or their lives.

Common signs of addictions include:

  • Obsessive thoughts and actions

  • Disregard for harm caused by actions

  • Sudden weight changes

  • Bloodshot eyes

  • Insomnia

  • Looking unkempt

  • Slurred speech

It is important to remember that not all people affected by substance abuse will show the same symptoms, and you should follow your gut if you suspect that a member of your community is dealing with drug or alcohol addiction.
