Supporting Students in Recovery

Students face a lot of pressure, and mental health and substance use struggles can derail a student’s academic life and emotional wellbeing. Even though addressing these issues can feel daunting, especially during the school year, with the right resources, your student can overcome their struggles and get back on track.

Recovery is possible with the right integrated support and without having to choose between school and healing.

During the school year, your student does not have to continue to fall behind. At Insight Northwest Recovery, we want to see your student succeed and build resilience. Our mental health and recovery and addiction treatment programs in Oregon are built specifically for students 12 and up struggling with co-occurring disorders, and offer flexible, evidence-based care.

The truth is, mental health treatment supports academic success, so addiction recovery for high school and college students provides help for students struggling with mental health and substance use—offering them the chance to achieve academically and build resilience in life.

What Makes INR’s Recovery Programs Different?

At INR, we follow an integrated treatment approach for students aged 12 and up navigating both mental health and substance use challenges. INR’s programs address both the mental health issue and substance use together, ensuring no part of a student’s struggle is overlooked. Each student receives an individualized treatment plan built around their unique needs, strengths, and goals.

Collaboration is at the heart of our approach. Our team works closely with families, schools, and other providers to create a consistent support network, ensuring that progress in recovery is reinforced both in and outside of treatment.

To make services as accessible as possible, INR offers both in-person and virtual options for students across Oregon. This flexibility allows students to receive consistent care without disrupting school schedules during the busy academic year.

Our goal is to encourage and help young people address their challenges head-on and develop the skills needed to thrive—not just during youth, but long-term.

Understanding Integrated Treatment for Students

For many students, mental health challenges and substance use are deeply connected. It’s common for young people to turn to alcohol, cannabis, or other substances as a way to cope with depression, anxiety, or trauma, and for these substances to in turn worsen any mental health issues. These situations, known as co-occurring disorders, require an approach that treats both the root cause and the symptoms, such as substance use, because it improves long-term outcomes.

At INR, integrated care means combining forms of therapy and treatment into one coordinated plan to address the co-occurring disorder.

Students receive group therapy to provide peer connection, helping students realize they’re not alone while learning from shared experiences, along with individual therapy to explore personal challenges in a private setting, develop coping tools, and set meaningful goals.

Family therapy also plays a key role because it fosters healthier communication and strengthens relationships at home, allowing healing outside of treatment. When needed, medication management is available to support students in achieving their overall treatment goals.

Skill-building is woven throughout the program, with a focus on emotional regulation, communication, and setting boundaries. These tools not only aid in recovery but also prepare students for success in school, relationships, and life beyond treatment leading to greater resilience.

Program Options for Students: PHP, IOP, Outpatient

At INR, students have access to a range of treatment options tailored to their needs, schedules, and recovery goals. These treatment options seek to ensure your student receives appropriate care for their co-occurring disorder, while also making sure care works with your student and their schedule. We want to help your student reclaim their life and succeed in school and beyond. For us, helping your student build resilience is key.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

We have a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals who will work with your student age 12 and up on a treatment plan tailored to their specific needs. PHP, also known as Intensive Day Treatment, provides a combination of group therapy, individual and/or family counseling, psychiatric treatment education and alternative activities for all learning styles, with the goal of treating mental health issues, substance use disorders, personality disorders, or bipolar disorders.

Our PHP program has a variety of benefits, including flexibility around work, school, and family schedules, and the ability to recover in a clean, safe, welcoming, and structured environment.

  • Most intensive option (up to 25 hours per week)

  • Ideal for students needing significant structure and stabilization

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

School or family commitments can sometimes create demanding schedules that make it challenging for your student to dedicate full days for treatment. That's why we offer multiple high-quality outpatient treatment programs in-person to ensure that you or your loved one can access the support you need to heal and grow.

  • 3–5 days/week

  • Afternoon/evening sessions to accommodate school

  • Strong peer support and continued therapy

Outpatient & Virtual Therapy

At INR, we also offer flexible, effective online treatment programs for students ages 12 and up. Whether you need support for mental health concerns, addiction recovery, or both, our integrated treatment approach ensures you receive personalized care that treats the whole person.

  • Great for transitioning out of higher care

  • Ideal for students with busy school or college schedules

By offering PHP, IOP, and outpatient services, INR ensures students can receive the right level of support at the right time, helping them move forward in recovery while staying on the path of academic success.

Academic Support & School Coordination

At Insight Northwest Recovery (INR), treatment is part of the student’s whole life. With student and family consent, INR communicates directly with schools to create personalized support plans that accommodate each student’s recovery needs. This collaboration ensures teachers and counselors understand the student’s circumstances and can offer flexibility where needed and that the whole student is taken into consideration when in recovery.

INR’s programs support executive functioning, routine-building, and confidence, helping them rebuild habits that support long-term success.

For college students, INR provides additional support for managing recovery while staying enrolled or planning a smooth re-entry after a leave of absence. Our integrated approach helps ensure education remains a part of each student’s recovery journey setting them up for both academic and personal growth.

What Families and Students Can Expect Day-to-Day

At INR, students and families can expect a warm, welcoming, compassionate, and supportive environment, whether in person at the Eugene or Salem facilities, or virtually from home. Each day begins with check-ins and our daily structure ensures student needs are addressed and prioritized, including emotional support.

One of the most valuable aspects of the program is peer connection. Students interact with peers who are facing similar challenges, reducing feelings of isolation and fostering a sense of belonging. Group therapy and shared learning encourage mutual support and understanding.

In addition to therapy, students have access to psychiatry services, case management, and real-time crisis support when needed. This integrated care ensures that mental health and substance use concerns are addressed promptly and comprehensively—and, most importantly, together.

We work with families to help their student(s) during recovery. Families can expect open communication, progress updates, and opportunities to participate in the recovery process.

When to Consider a Recovery Program for Your Student

Recognizing when your teen or young adult might benefit from a recovery program is crucial for early intervention. In truth, seeking help early can make a meaningful difference in your student’s well-being and future success.

Key signs can include:

  • Withdrawal from school, friends, or family, which often signals emotional distress.

  • A noticeable drop in academic performance can indicate that mental health or substance use issues are impacting their ability to focus and succeed.

  • Increased anxiety, depression, or substance use are clear warning signs that professional support may be needed.

  • If your student shows a refusal or fear of going to school, it’s important to explore the underlying causes rather than dismissing these behaviors.

  • Additionally, if they experience repeated relapses or difficulty managing symptoms, a structured recovery program like ours at INR can provide the comprehensive care and support needed for lasting change.
