Outpatient Addiction Treatment

What is Outpatient Treatment?

At Insight Northwest Recovery, we focus on addiction and mental health treatment programs for clients between the ages of 13 and 25.

Specifically, we offer 4 levels of outpatient care:

  1. Intensive Day Treatment (PHP)

  2. Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

  3. Outpatient Treatment

  4. After Care

Often, outpatient treatment, or level 3 of our treatment offering, follows the completion of one or more intensive programs—such as residential treatment, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), or partial hospitalization programs (PHP) — and is the step prior to After Care.

However, unlike our other outpatient programs, the sessions are shorter and meet less frequently. For this level of care, you would meet 3-hours, one time a week for group counseling sessions for 3 months.

Inpatient vs Outpatient Rehab

Unlike inpatient treatment, our outpatient program does not require clients to stay overnight in a treatment center. Additionally, the level of care, intensity of treatment, and the length of enrollment in the program varies.

Inpatient care, also called residential treatment, is typically reserved for clients who have more acute symptoms and require around the clock care. In contrast, clients enrolled in outpatient rehab attend appointments and therapy sessions on a scheduled basis, and return home following their treatment. These clients usually have more “mild,” or less severe symptoms, and are in the process of transitioning back to their everyday lives.

Another substantial difference is the lack of medical support during detox or withdrawal, and medication assisted treatment (MAT) in most drug rehab programs. While this can be an incredibly vital part of the recovery process, these practices are often offered in more intensive levels of care, such as residential treatment. Managing withdrawal symptoms during detox, and using medication to support the recovery requires medical interventions, and the process needs to be supervised by a team of treatment providers equipped to administer a combination of medicine, behavioral therapy, and counseling. This is most often used in substance abuse treatment, and can reduce the risk of overdose, improve treatment retention, and be a difference maker in the success of recovery in the long run.

While we do not offer these inpatient treatment services in-house, we are always happy to make professional referrals, and help you get your journey to recovery started. In order to set yourself up for the best chance of success, We recommend that you complete this step of the recovery process before enrolling in our outpatient rehab program.

Benefits of Outpatient Treatment

Ongoing recovery needs to fit into your life in order to work long-term. Outpatient rehab programs are flexible, and allow you to continue with your day-to-day schedule at work or school while receiving drug and alcohol treatment. This not only allows you to get back to your life, but builds the foundation for long-term recovery through building life-skills, and support networks that will extend past your outpatient care.

Our treatment providers at Insight Northwest Recovery provide a safe, supportive environment for you to share your challenges and connect with others dealing with similar issues. Your journey will be entirely unique to you, but working within a group to learn how to manage your recovery provides an opportunity for mutual support and understanding. If you are ready to take the next step in your recovery journey, schedule a free consultation with one of our treatment providers today.

What Do Outpatient Programs Treat?

Outpatient treatment programs treat a variety of substance use and mental health disorders. Often, these disorders are co-occurring, and it is most effective to treat both at the same time.

Often, addiction is a result of one or more mental illnesses, and can be hard to diagnose as symptoms become mixed together. As a result, individuals turn to a substance such as opioids or alcohol to cope, complicating the diagnosis further.

Our outpatient treatment program uses a variety of behavioral therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), family therapy, group therapy, 12 step programs, educational units, art therapy, and wilderness therapy. We believe that a combination of therapeutic practices as well as educating you and your families about what exactly you’re dealing with sets our clients up for success following treatment.

Mental Illness And Substance Use Disorders We Treat:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Eating Disorders

  • Personality Disorders

  • Behavioral Addictions

  • Drug and Alcohol Addictions

Insight Northwest Recovery currently focus on the young adult population—ages 13-25, with the intention to enroll adolescents for our teen treatment groups in the next year. While the outpatient rehab programs themselves are basically the same, the main difference will be the addition of family therapy for the teen groups. In treating adolescents, it is important to consider how the people in their home environment are impacting their mental illness or addiction. By identifying changes that the family can work on together, they can keep recovery at the forefront of the home. These sessions focus on a collaborative, non-blaming, approach on improving relationships and setting up a plan for success.

In both teen and adult populations, we put a large emphasis on peer-based support, and as a result group therapy and educational units make up a large part of our program. During these sessions, you will learn about the dynamics of recovery, how to build a healthier lifestyle, get support in resuming daily activities like work or school, and create a recovery and sobriety network that will extend into After Care.

Our team aims to curate a treatment plan that works to address the entire picture of what you are dealing with, and supervise your progress to keep you on the path to recovery.

Community Support & Outpatient Treatment

Family Therapy

While we only offer family therapy to our teen population, we believe that community and family support during treatment is a major part of recovery. Not only can this support decrease feelings of isolation, but also offer moral support, encouragement, and motivation to continue with treatment when things get difficult. By having your family, biological or chosen, involved in the recovery process, they can also begin to hone skills on their side to help you when treatment concludes. Additionally, they can provide a positive influence to our clients by modeling self-care behaviors, boundary setting, and helping you to avoid any triggers that may lead to a relapse. Depending on your needs and your treatment plan, we may refer you to our community partner Insight Northwest Counseling for on-going family therapy sessions or other therapeutic interventions like medication management, or psychological evaluations.

Benefits Of 12 Step Programs

Another way that we incorporate community support into our treatment plans is through the use of key components of 12 step programs (similar to Alcoholics Anonymous for alcohol addiction), to help clients struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. This process breaks the recovery process down into a structured approach, with clear steps on how to overcome alcohol and drug addiction. This can make the process feel less overwhelming, and more manageable to clients in the program.

One of the core principles of 12 step recovery programs is the community or peer-based support system. Being around people who share similar struggles and experiences can make you feel less alone, and give you a sense of belonging with a peer group that emphasizes sober living.

Another benefit to the group dynamic is accountability. In 12 step programs, you are encouraged to take responsibility for your own recovery, and be accountable to others in the group. This can help you overcome addiction and stay on track with your recovery.

What Withdrawal Symptoms Can You Expect?

When individuals use addictive substances regularly, their bodies start to rely on them to survive. Breaking free from this dependence through detox is a key part of the recovery process, and gets you ready to fight your addiction. Typically, this process takes 7-10 days, but when completed individuals are no longer at a high risk for complications due to substance abuse. Withdrawal symptoms from drugs and alcohol are similar, and should be managed by a team of medical professionals. This part of the recovery process is where medication assisted treatment (MAT) would be beneficial as this can make the withdrawal process more tolerable.

Withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Tremors

  • Sweating

  • Nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Headaches

  • Trouble Breathing.

Ideally, clients will have stopped substance use and completed the detox process prior to starting one of our programs. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
