Joel Bowder

MA, NCC, CADC-R, Professional Counseling Associate

I believe all people have the ability to grow and change how they respond to life’s challenges. In both individual and group settings, I strive to create a supportive space where you feel heard, validated, and encouraged to explore meaningful change. My approach is primarily cognitive and person-centered, emphasizing collaboration, trust, and openness while supporting your growth both individually and within the group process.

I have a background in working with both teens and adults in nonprofit and healthcare settings, which has shaped my passion for supporting others in their growth and well-being. My experience providing guidance, mentorship, and emotional support in a community-based environment, along with managing a medical practice, has given me a well-rounded perspective on both the emotional and practical aspects of care.I was drawn to counseling and youth treatment through my desire to help individuals better understand themselves, navigate challenges, and build healthier ways of coping. Working closely with adolescents and adults has deepened my appreciation for how early experiences, relationships, and environments shape the way we think, feel, and respond to the world. These experiences have influenced my counseling style, leading me to take a primarily cognitive approach while also emphasizing a person-centered, relational foundation. I value creating a supportive and collaborative space—both individually and in group settings—where clients feel safe to explore their experiences, build insight, and move toward meaningful change.

I love being outside! Whether that’s at the coast, sitting around a bonfire with friends and family, hiking or backpacking. I’m always up for finding new adventures and places to camp in my ’77 VW Westy. I also enjoy watching soccer.

I am passionate about supporting individuals in recognizing their capacity for growth and change, and in developing healthier ways to respond to life’s challenges. I value creating a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment—both in individual and group settings—where you feel heard, understood, and empowered to explore the areas of your life you would like to change. I believe the therapeutic relationship is a key part of meaningful change. Whether working one-on-one or within an IOP group, I strive to build trust, foster open communication, and create a space where you can safely explore your experiences and discover what is most helpful for your growth.

Professional Background

I have experience working with both teens and adults in a nonprofit setting, where I supported individuals through life challenges, personal growth, and community connection. In addition, I worked as a manager in a medical practice, where I developed strong skills in leadership, collaboration, and client care. Across these roles, I have been drawn to helping fields that focus on supporting others in their growth, resilience, and overall well-being.
